Introducing an upcoming Article Series!
Having been on the receiving side of starting out and trying to get your career in the entertainment and creative business of the ground, I have decided a few months ago to help “new” to the scene folks by giving them a “hand up” so to speak.
One of the most important things for any newcomer is to get known, and sometimes you can find this sort of publicity easiest by doing an interview with an already established writer or journalist.
At this moment I am working on an Article / Interview Series for new or fairly new musicians, in which I am giving them the opportunity to introduce them-selves and their music via my Blog.
I have always had a deep love for music, and play keyboard as well as am starting to learn Guitar myself. For me however it is only a private hobby which I will never turn into a career. Yet for many others out there being in a band, performing life and becoming well known for their art is a dream.
Those are the folks I am looking for. Musicians of all categories who are just starting out. I am actively working on making connections in the music world to help give those folks an opportunity to be seen and heard.
If you know or are a musician who is just starting out, perhaps has had a few public performances under his/her belt already and would be interested in doing an email or phone interview with me, please feel free to send me a message at reginasunderland@reginasunderland.com
I am looking forward to introducing an amazing musical talent who has a deep passion for Drums to you soon. Keep an eye out for the first interview with Louis Cole – coming to this blog soon!

Getting started in your writing career!
If you want to make your living from your passion for writing you need do a lot more then just write everyday. All the writing in the world is not going to help you sell your Articles if nobody can find you or them.
With so many amateur or freelance writers all over the digital media it has become more important then ever that you stay in the eyes of the readers. This means that you need to become your own marketing specialist and PR person if at all possible.
Building an online Portfolio of published articles should also become a priority for new and aspiring writers. When I first start out writing for publication I submitted articles to http://www.triond.com/rw/6279 which is a huge online article placement farm as I call it. Essentially you are not going to receive any up front payments, but your articles can earn you monthly revenues via views and as of several months ago now via Google Adsense.
The upsides and downsides for writing and publishing via Triond are:
- No upfront payment and no guarantee you will have your articles seen, hence earning royalties.
- You can build an online presence on various Blogs throughout the internet which will increase your visibility and can lead to writing assignments and blogging offers.
- It is a great practice tool which will allow you to sharpen your writing techniques and skills as you see which of your articles bring in the most views.
The next online media company I joined up with was AC – Associated Content which merged not too long ago with yahoo. Associated Content has been and still is one of my favorite places to submit some of my Articles to. There you have the opportunity to earn up front payments and royalties for your Articles. I don’t know about other writers on there, but most of my up front payments range anywhere from $4.00 to $8.00 per Article, depending on the topic, the longevity of the topic and the quality of the writing itself. Of course their up front payments are reflective as well if they can earn advertisement dollars with specific keywords used.
If you decide to join up with them allow me to advise you to add new content at least every other week. The higher your clout level goes, the more royalties you can earn over time. At them moment I have a clout level of 9 with 10 being the highest possible. I am very excited about that especially since I am already 92% towards achieving the 10.
Another “write for pay” website I joined was Helium but I did not stick with them for too long. For some reason it just never worked out for me and the fact that you could lose your money if you didn’t’ write regular or jump through the additional hoops they required simply turned me off. The minimum pay out they have is $25.00 and when I didn’t even reach that there after being with them for well over 6 months I simply dropped them from my list of worth while writing sites.
Once you have added several articles to your resume (I would suggest at least 25 to 30) you can start looking around for further markets to sell your writing to.
I suggest you invest in:2011 Writer’s Market Deluxe Edition (Writer’s Market Online) This is a great starting point for your search and covers a lot of ground. If you would rather have a print version or need something a little cheaper consider buying:2011 Writer’s Market
This will mean you need to spend several hours a week on researching. Not only for information for your articles, but for the various markets as well. Breaking into magazines is not that easy as you think. A lot of magazines have their own staff writers and if you are a new author you can easily be overlooked.
A great way to make a little bit of money on magazines are “filler content” and gain you anywhere from $25.00 to $100 if you are able to sell it. I suggest you visit your favorite library and start familiarizing yourself with various Magazines you might be interested in writing for. See what sort of content they frequently publish and which filler areas they have available.
Another book you may want to invest in which can help you out with understanding quality in writing is: A Question of Quality: Popularity and Value in Modern Creative Writing
Make notes, I can’t stress that enough. The more you learn about a publication before you try to submit to them the better of you are. Expect rejections – a lot of them.
For a while I also wrote for Greeting Card companies and ever so often I could make $75 to $150 per batch sold. Those have become more difficult now and quiet often you won’t even get a response anymore.
More to come later.

Online Magazine looking for fresh voiced writers
Hello my darlings,
I have come across a call for new writers today and I thought it would be a great idea to pass it along.
This is a magazine created by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. Take a look at the submission guidelines and see if this might just be a little step up for your resume as a freelance writer and entrepreneur.
A great book for bloggers and online marketeers.
I was looking for a good all around book which would help me streamline and enhance my online writing and blogging. I came across The Yahoo! Style Guide: The Ultimate Sourcebook for Writing, Editing, and Creating Content for the Digital World.
When they claim ultimate they are not far off target. I won’t say it is the best out there since I have not read all of them, but this one is very good. It covers many aspects of online writing which can make a huge difference.
One example is the difference in how we speak now in comparison to years ago. It further warns us to cut cliche out of our sentences.
Copyright is something many of us run into trouble with. This book explains copyright well which helps you in the long run to avoid running into legal problems.
This book is perfect for anyone working in regards to writing in the digital age. Regardless if you market via newsletters, email, SEO or mobile marketing. This book has something for everyone. Check it out and consider buying it.

My curse – typing with an accent.
Most of you know are aware that I am originally from Germany and evenso I have been in the USA and reading, writing and speaking English for a long time now, I still tend to type with an accent.
That means that ever so often grammar and spelling mistakes creep their unwanted way into my writing. Spellchecker is not my friend let me tell you, since it does not always catch my mistakes. As long as the word it typed out correctly (albeit meaning something different) it won’t catch it. Guess it isn’t psychic afterall.
Now this “curse” does have a double edge to it. It really irritates some of my Readers to the point that they have to leave and never come back. They are not interested in what someone who can not even get their grammar 100% correct has to say. Being a writer they can of course expect for me to never make any such horrible mistakes, or can they? It is a somewhat known fact that even some of the best known Authors have still problems with their spelling and grammar, that is why they employ the services of an Editor or Proof reader. Sadly those services are not cheap and lets face it can take quiet some time to receive your work back. Not a good option for a Post on a blog.
The other thing which happens is that some of my Readers being aware of my origin have found it a source of delight and enjoy the chuckle that it often brings. You can almost sit there and hear me say it, can’t you.
My style of writing is very conversational instead of technical. With other words I prefer to have a “conversation” with you my darling instead of just giving you cold hard facts. In my minds eye you are sitting with me around my living room with a nice cup of coffee or tea in your end, while we discuss different topics. So much fun!
For that reason I do adore “real” comments from my readers. Sharing ideas on topics and sending traffic back and forth between blogs can not only become a wonderful past time, but increase traffic for all. Of course that doesn’t mean the spam bots or the spam linkers. Those get irritating.
And in the sentence above you see another handicap of mine. I tend to write long drawn out sentences. Since my mind still “thinks” in german at times, I feel it necessary to make myself extremely clear. Which often adds unnecessary words to the sentence structure.
So what can you do about this? If you are a foreigner with English as your secondary language no matter how long you have been fluent in English, you can do the following.
Of course that depends on if you have the time and energy to.
#1 Re-read your post once it has been posted and edit it if necessarily.
#2 Read it out loud! Does it sound ackward to you? Is it hard to read out loud? If you answer “yes”, try to change the sentence or seek out the words which stop the flow.
#3 Aim for at least 80% action sentences. Those are sentences which call to action or are active. Passive sentences are good for filling spaces, but don’t move your writing forward.
#4 Don’t give up! I know I wanted to in the past. Learn to improve your writing one item at a time.
#5 Ask your friends if they can make sense out of what you are trying to say. Remember that most people if they know you are really trying to learn to get better will give you honest feedback. Just don’t take it too hard if it is negative. Learn from it and improve.
Well that is all for today! I hope to see you back soon.
